Đến nay việc thắp hương đã trở thành một phong tục tập quán lâu đời thể hiện sự thành kính của con cháu với tổ tiên, của người dương với cõi âm. Do đó vào những dịp lễ Tết, giỗ, ngày mùng 1 và ngày rằm hay bất kể các hoạt động tâm linh nào mọi người đều thắp hương để cầu mong những điều tốt đẹp nhất đến với gia đình mình.

Thứ tự thắp hương chuẩn

Trong nhiều gia đình Việt Nam, việc có nhiều bàn thờ khác nhau như bàn thờ Phật, bàn thờ gia tiên, bàn thờ Thần Tài, v.v., là điều phổ biến. Điều này dẫn đến băn khoăn về thứ tự thắp nhang sao cho đúng và tôn trọng. Dưới đây là hướng dẫn về thứ tự thắp nhang chuẩn trên các bàn thờ:

  • Bàn thờ mẹ Quan Âm hoặc bàn thờ Phật: Thắp nhang trên bàn thờ Phật hoặc mẹ Quan Âm trước tiên để bày tỏ lòng thành kính và cầu mong sự bình an, thanh tịnh.

  • Bàn thờ ông Táo: Ông Táo là vị thần bảo hộ bếp núc và gia đình, việc thắp nhang trên bàn thờ ông Táo thể hiện lòng biết ơn và cầu mong sự ấm no, hạnh phúc.
  • Bàn thờ người mới mất: Bàn thờ người mới mất cần được thắp nhang để bày tỏ lòng thương tiếc và cầu nguyện cho linh hồn người đã khuất được siêu thoát.
  • Bàn thờ cúng cô hồn: Cuối cùng, thắp nhang trên bàn thờ cúng cô hồn để an ủi những linh hồn vất vưởng, không nơi nương tựa.

Thông thường khi thắp hương chỉ nên cắm số nhang lẻ. Có nhiều câu hỏi đặt ra rằng tại sao khi thắp hương người ta chỉ thắp theo số lẻ 1,3,5,7,9 mà không phải số chẵn? Bởi trong văn hóa tập tục, người Việt ta quan niệm rằng số lẻ là đại diện cho tính dương, cho sự may mắn, còn số chẵn đại diện cho tính âm và mang khá nhiều sự xui xẻo. Do vậy, để gửi lòng thành kính đến với tổ tiên, đến với nhà Phật, nên thắp hương theo số lẻ để mong gia đình được phù hộ độ trì và cũng như cầu mong bình an cho gia đạo.

Thắp một nén nhang

Thắp một nén hương được cho là để thờ cúng Thần Tài và ông Địa. Bên cạnh đó thắp một nén hương cũng được hiểu là để thời cúng thần linh trong nhà với mong muốn cầu may mắn tiền tài cho gia chủ, bình an cho gia đạo. Do đó, thường khi cầu bình an, gia chủ sẽ thắp 1 nén hương vào buổi sáng, buổi tối để mọi việc may mắn, thuận lợi.

Thắp 3 nén hương

Thắp 3 nén hương có nhiều ý nghĩa và tùy theo quan niệm của mỗi người. Số 3 có thể đại diện cho Tam tài (Thiên – Địa – Nhân), cũng có thể đại diện cho Tam bảo (Phật – Pháp – Tăng) hay đại diện cho Tam thời (Quá khứ – Hiện tại – Tương lai),…

Mỗi nén hương tùy vào từng vị trí lại có ý nghĩa khác nhau. Nén ở giữa được gọi là hương Giáo chủ, nén bên trái là hương Thanh Long, nén bên phải là hương Bạch hổ. Ý nghĩa sâu sắc trong việc thắp 3 nén hương này là để bảo vệ gia đạo, xua đi tai ương, phiền nhiễu.

Thắp 5 nén nhang

Thắp 5 nén hương xuất phát từ Âm dương ngũ hành hương: Kim, Mộc, Thủy, Hỏa, Thổ. Vì là thắp hương cầu ngũ phương nên thường được sử dụng trong những việc lớn có ý nghĩa cao cả có quy mô lớn như cầu cho quốc gia thái bình hay cầu cho dòng tộc hưng thịnh.

Thắp 7 nén hương

Thắp 7 nén hương được xem như gọi Bắc đẩu Thất tinh hương, Thần linh, Thiên Tướng, do vậy thường ít được sử dụng và không nên dùng cách thắp hương này nếu chưa đến mức bất đắc dĩ, đường cùng.

Thắp 9 nén nhang

Thắp 9 nén nhang nếu gia chủ mong được cầu cứu, là tín hiệu cấp bách bởi không còn cách nào mà con người có thể giải quyết được. Số 9 đại diện cho Cửu cửu liên hoàn hương, cầu mong Ngọc Hoàng Thượng đế và Thập Điện Diêm Vương cứu giúp.

Tư thế thắp hương

Lưu ý đặc biệt quan trọng khi thắp hương chính là phong thái chỉn chu, đoan chính. Cần phải sắp xếp lễ vật chỉnh tề trước khi cúng và giữ khoảng cách vừa phải với bát hương. Thận trọng trong mọi nghi lễ từ đầu đến cuối một cách hoàn chỉnh.

Xử lý hương tắt khi đang cúng

Bên cạnh nguyên nhân do chất lượng hương không tốt thì việc hương tắt khi đang cúng đặc biệt là trong đêm giao thừa có thể là điềm báo của xui xẻo trong năm tới. Do vậy nên chuẩn bị hương có chất lượng tốt và nếu có xảy ra trường hợp này thì nên châm lửa để hương cháy tiếp mà không nên nhổ ra cắm lại.
