Nghĩa trang liệt sỹ Trường Sơn nằm ở trên khu đồi Bến Tắt, cạnh đường quốc lộ 15, thuộc địa phận của xã Vĩnh Tường, Gio Linh, tỉnh Quảng Trị, là nơi quy tập phần mộ của các liệt sĩ của Quân giải phóng miền Nam Việt Nam và Quân đội nhân dân Việt Nam trên tuyến đường Trường Sơn.

Quá trình xây dựng nghĩa trang Trường Sơn

Ngay trong những năm của cuộc kháng chiến chống Mỹ cứu nước, cựu phó thủ tướng Đồng Sỹ Nguyên đã đề xuất nên quy tập các liệt sĩ nằm rải rác trên dọc tuyến đường Trường Sơn và đất bạn Lào, Campuchia lại một nơi để những đồng đội và nhất là thân nhân liệt sĩ tiện lui tới thăm viếng.

Sau khi đất nước thống nhất, tướng Đồng Sĩ Nguyên cũng đã lựa chọn xã Vĩnh Tường, Gio Linh, tỉnh Quảng Trị, là nơi quy tập phần mộ của các liệt sĩ, đồng thời chỉ đạo quy tập mộ liệt sĩ Trường Sơn. Nghĩa trang khởi công xây dựng vào ngày 24/10/1975 và hoàn thành vào ngày 10/4/1977. Cho đến nay, cũng đã quy tập được hơn 1 vạn hài cốt liệt sĩ về nghĩa trang Trường Sơn.

Nghĩa trang Trường Sơn được xem là công trình kiến trúc đá lớn nhất Việt Nam tính đến thời điểm hiện tại với tổng diện tích 140.000m2, khu tượng đài 7.000m2, đất phần mộ 23.000m2, khu cảnh hồ 35.000m2, khu cây xanh 60.000m2, đường dải nhựa 15.000m2. Khu trung tâm của nghĩa trang nằm trên một ngọn đồi với chiều cao tới 32,4 m với bia tưởng niệm chung bằng đá trắng, rỗng ruột và khuyết 3 mặt.

Các ngôi mộ liệt sĩ ở nghĩa Trang Trường Sơn được sắp xếp theo từng tỉnh thành trải trên 5 quả đồi. Giữa các khu mộ là những cánh rừng xanh tốt quanh năm. Lối đi trong các khu mộ liệt sĩ cũng được lát sạch phẳng phiu, sạch sẽ, có hoa lá tươi tốt 4 mùa. Mỗi khu mộ lại có nhà tưởng niệm riêng với lối kiến trúc phảng phất bóng dáng của các làng quê Việt Nam.

Hiện nay, ở mỗi khu mộ ở nghĩa trang liệt sĩ đều có người chăm sóc hàng ngày, số quản trang của nghĩa trang Trường Sơn lên tới 21 người, các phần mộ – kể cả mộ liệt sĩ khuyết danh đều được xây dựng kiên cố, vững chắc, có sơ đồ mộ chí rõ ràng và được bảo quản, giữ gìn chu đáo.

Nghĩa trang Trường Sơn quanh năm nằm dưới tán cây xanh rì, không gian trang trọng và thiêng liêng xứng đáng là nơi yên nghỉ của những chiến sĩ,  liệt sĩ – những người có công với đất nước – người đã “nằm xuống” vì nền độc lập tự do của dân tộc.

Hiện tại nghĩa trang Trường Sơn vẫn có chỗ để tiếp tục tiếp nhận những hài cốt của các liệt sĩ của Quân giải phóng miền Nam Việt Nam và Quân đội nhân dân Việt Nam trên tuyến đường Trường Sơn đã hy sinh xương máu vì nền độc và thống nhất dân tộc. Mỗi năm tại đây cũng có tới hơn 2 triệu lượt khách tới thăm viếng nhằm gửi lòng kính cẩn thương nhớ và tri ân sâu sắc đến những chiến sĩ – những người đã hy sinh vì màu đỏ thắm của lá quốc kỳ.
